Site visits are conducted by representatives of the UNU-GTP to the countries requesting training. The potential role of geothermal energy within the energy plans of the respective country is assessed, and an evaluation made of the institutional capacities in the field of geothermal research and utilization. Based on this, the training needs of the country are assessed and recipient institutions selected.
The selection criteria for cooperative countries:

The Government of Iceland and the UNU finance fellows from institutions in developing countries, sub-Saharan countries and some Central and Eastern European countries.

Priority is given to professionals from developing countries.

A given country should have significant geothermal potential.

Geothermal should play an important role in improving on the Millenium Development Goals in a given country.

Priority is given to countries/institutions where geothermal work is already under way.

It is of great importance to assist in establishing complete teams of specialists in selected institutions.

Industrialised countries can also be accepted provided that they bring their own funding.
